Welcome to HILLS

HILLS is the proud recipient of the 2012 “Step Above Award” by Colorado’s largest parent advocacy and support group, Parent to Parent of Colorado.  The “Step Above Award” is for making a lasting and significant contribution by enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities or special health care needs, and for seeing the potential for our sons and daughters and the future they hold.

HILLS, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to offer affordable opportunities for people with developmental disabilities or traumatic brain injury, that promote health, foster independence and further enable each of our clients to become contributing members of their communities.

Our philosophy is that everyone has the right to travel, lead healthy lives, and socialize with their peers.  Our goal is to create those opportunities for people with developmental disabilities and TBI.  Health and weight are issues for many people in our modern, fast food world.  Some people with certain developmental disabilities are even more susceptible to these health and weight issues (as stated by the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability) so it even more challenging for them to lead healthy lives.  Our programs hope to allow everyone to have fun while teaching them that being active and healthy can be fun too.

Our vision is that clients will be able to chose from a variety of activities, both indoor and outdoor, that are meant to challenge everyone’s own personal abilities and at the same time allow them to socialize amongst their peers in a safe and accepting environment.  We hope to instill an appreciation for the great outdoors and give our clients the opportunity to explore new places and meet new friends.  Equally important to what we do is the respite that we provide to our clients’ caregivers, some of whom have never had a break.  Caregiving is a rewarding but difficult job and we can only truly care for our loved ones if we have taken care of ourselves as well.  We do not allow caregivers to participate in our programs because we feel strongly that they need and deserve time to themselves.

At HILLS, we value being both socially and environmentally conscious.  Certain practices such as: using small family run businesses as much as possible, conducting service projects throughout the year, and maintaining eco-friendly policies in our office are all examples of how we will achieve those goals.

Even though HILLS is based in Denver, clients from all over the country can join us on our trips! Our age and ability range is broad so please contact us and we can suggest which trip will be just right for you.
