We found a great website (http://www.asd.travel/view.html) that led us in the direction of beaches that offer free wheelchairs accessible for the sand.  We decided to go to La Jolla where they had 2 manual beach wheelchairs but the list included the following beaches as well:

  • Coronado
  • Imperial Beach
  • Ocean Beach
  • Oceanside
  • LaJolla Shores
  • Mission Beach
  • Silver Strands

At La Jolla’s beach, go to 8200 Camino del Oro San Diego, 92037 and look for the lifeguard tower right next to the parking lot.  Ask them for a beach wheelchair and they will just keep your license until you return it.  Because there are only 2 they said that in the summer they may not always be available, but when were there in February, both were available.  We had numerous San Diego residents that came up to us and said they didn’t know about the service but glad they know now!
